UC Hastings Moot Court Wins Sports Law National Championship

by Toni Young '76, Director Moot Court, Appellate Advocacy, Legal Writing & Research

UC Hastings Moot Court has added another National Championship to its growing list of impressive victories!!

Our UC Hastings Moot Court team won the 2013 Tulane Sports Law National Competition Championship with unanimous judge approval and an undefeated record in seven rounds of oral argument. 3L students Kendra Chapman, Jacqueline Dailey and Brian Stanton dominated the competition by explaining complex collective bargaining and preemption issues in simple and convincing terms. The team was especially impressive in arguing the Final Round just ten minutes after the coin toss which put them off-brief on a side that they had only argued once before in the tournament. Unstoppable, dominating, compelling, incredible, impressive and unflappable are just some of the compliments that the Hastings Tulane Moot Court team received. Congratulations and many thanks to Alumni Coach Adam Polk, and Student Coaches Henry Truong and Chris Petroni for their dedication and excellent training and support.

UC Hastings had two Whittier Juvenile Law Moot Court Competition teams this year and the teams won Second Place/Finalist team, and Semifinalist in the Competition with both teams giving thoughtful and compelling arguments throughout the tournament. 3L Danielle Corkhill and 2L Sara Huffman were the Final Round team, losing an incredibly close round, but winning Second Place Brief and a Top Ten Oral Advocate Award for Danielle. Alumni Coach Kate Svinarich and Student Coach Elaine Kuo did an amazing job of preparing the team and helping them build their arguments throughout the competition. 2L students Eric Reichenbacher and Jodie Smith were very impressive in their rounds placing as one of the top four teams and gaining accolades along the way. Our thanks to Alumni Coach Heidi Hansen Kalscheur and Student Coach David Chang who generously gave their time and Moot Court experience to help Eric and Jodie succeed.

UC Hastings Stetson International Environmental Team placed in the Quarterfinals of the North American Regional of this international tournament. 2L students Ben Buchwalter and Kaitlin Keohane and Brief Editor Rosanne O’Hara also won a Third Place Brief Award. Alumni Coaches Diana Hardy and Stephen Tollafield and Student Coach Joanna Lee prepared the team well for the intense issues involving developing and developed nations and the compelling needs of both parties balanced against the need for sharing the Earth’s limited resources.

We have many more Moot Court teams competing over the next few months and our Moot Court teams need judges until early April. If you have time and the desire to help our UC Hastings teams succeed, please share your knowledge and experience and sign up at: hastingsmootcourt.com. We look forward to seeing you at a UC Hastings Moot Court practice soon.

Congratulations to all of our teams and coaches on their victories! You make us very proud. Go UC Hastings Moot Court Family!!

Cheers,

Toni
