Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu
In summer 2010, following a national search, Frank H. Wu began service as Chancellor and Dean of UC Hastings.
In 2014, Chancellor Wu received unanimous renewal of his appointment following a review process that included faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
A law professor and former dean, as well as author of leading works on Asian Americans, Chancellor Wu practiced law in the San Francisco office of the Morrison & Foerster law firm prior to his academic career.
Chancellor Wu has offered a three-point plan for the future of UC Hastings.
Higher education must train students for their careers by giving them the actual skills needed to succeed in the profession.
The lawyers of today must be ready to function within a global economy with a trans-Pacific emphasis.
The best advocates and counselors are those who blend their technical abilities in analyzing formal doctrine with the insights of other disciplines as well, becoming problem-solvers and leaders.
Chancellor Wu has received numerous honors for his leadership. In 2013, the National Jurist magazine named him as the most "influential" dean in legal education. In 2012, the Daily Journal newspaper named him to their list of top 100 lawyers in California for his efforts to reform legal education. In 2008, he received the Chang-Lin Tien Education Leadership Award from the Asian Pacific Fund. Two recipients are chosen annually from a national pool to receive a $10,000 honorarium.
The strategic plan for UC Hastings, especially the decision to make a significant reduction to the J.D. enrollment and implement high-quality on-line legal education, attracted accolades nationwide during the 2011-12 academic year, and other leading schools soon followed in making similar decisions.
