It might be our location in San Francisco’s Civic Center, the home of every level of court minus the U.S. Supreme Court, which gives our students unparalleled access to study the law in the very forum where it is practiced and determined. It might also be the law school's proximity to the city’s Tenderloin district, where more than 90% of the residents live at or below the national poverty line. Such juxtaposition between wealth and poverty provides our students, especially those who aspire to use their legal degrees to create a more just society, with a daily reminder of the reasons why they are going to law school. Given our location, a legal education at UC Hastings is not merely academic, it is deeply relevant.
On the other hand, it might be the way we continue to recruit some of the finest legal educators to serve our students as teachers and guides. In the years following World War II, for instance, the College was known for its Sixty-Five Club, a group of eminent scholars and jurists who provided Hastings with one of the most distinguished faculties of any American law school. Today, UC Hastings' faculty is comprised of a group of outstanding teachers and nationally acclaimed scholars, many of whom have written the very casebooks used by law students throughout the country. And given our location, the College is in the privileged position to draw adjunct faculty from senior members of the California judiciary, partners of major Bay Area law firms, and leading public officials in criminal law, environmental law, immigration and civil rights.
It might be our outstanding alumni – a network that is 20,000 strong and growing -- who work at the highest level of law practice, innovate in business, and make policy in every state of the union and throughout the world. UC Hastings has produced scores of judges in California and outstanding public servants at every level of government service. UC Hastings graduates are always ready to offer a helping hand to students as formal and informal mentors and are seen as trailblazers in almost every area of the legal profession, as attested by their peers each year in the national Superlawyers rankings.
All of these qualities are impressive, but perhaps the most important reason why one might consider UC Hastings is the quality and passion of our students. UC Hastings students hail from more than 120 universities and colleges across the U.S. and overseas, many with advanced degrees or several years' experience in the workplace. They bring a wide variety of perspectives to discussions in and outside of class and a great deal of energy to over 70 student organizations. UC Hastings student leaders are as creative and innovative at organizing informational events, conferences, and lectures at Hastings as they are at organizing great social events. UC Hastings students see their success in law school as intimately connected to the success of their fellow classmates and the larger community, and they are eager to make their mark in California and throughout the world, even before graduation.
