Dean Frank H. Wu Ranked among Top 5 “Most Influential” People in Legal Education for 2nd Year Running

The National Jurist has again ranked UC Hastings Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu as among the nation’s top five “Most Influential People” in legal education.

The results of the annual ranking, released in the magazine’s January 2014 edition, emphasize UC Hastings’ ongoing strategic plan implementation—including a “bullish” approach to online education and creative clinics—that goes well beyond the school’s decision in 2012 to reduce JD enrollment by 20% over three years.

The article also credits Dean Wu’s “blunt style,” which “makes him a refreshing voice in legal education.”

“I believe the only constant is change,” says Dean Wu in the article. “I am not waiting for the market to bounce back. It will bounce, but not back. It will bounce to a different place, and then it will continue bouncing. We must adapt, and then we must adapt again.”

"Influence in legal education today derives from openness to change and commitment to excellence,” says UC Hastings Provost & Academic Dean Elizabeth L. Hillman. “Our Chancellor & Dean pursues both with a tirelessness and clarity that sets him apart."

“This recognition is welcome, but comes as no surprise,” adds UC Hastings Board of Directors Chair Marci Dragun ’86. “Dean Wu talks the talk and walks the walk. His interactions with the media and blogging for outlets such as Above the Law, Huffington Post, and LinkedIn are hugely influential in the discussion of changes taking place at UC Hastings and throughout legal education today. Likewise with the college's advancement and internal initiatives, Frank continues to move things forward. “

"UC Hastings’ strategic plan calls for legal education that is practical, international, and interdisciplinary," Dean Wu noted last year. "It also calls for a profound structural change. Any influence I may have had on legal education is due entirely to the school-wide implementation of this plan, developed over the course of a year with input from all constituencies, including faculty, students, staff, and our alumni."
