Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens Symposium Fund Established at UC Hastings

University of California Hastings College of the Law has established a symposium fund to honor the memory, life, and work of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, a member of the UC Hastings class of 1989.

Based on consultation with his family, UC Hastings will hold a symposium in the 2013-14 academic year in honor of Ambassador Stevens, addressing the issues to which he devoted a career of public service. The Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens Symposium will emphasize law and public policy as actually used in practice to advance global understanding and peace.

"Gathering experts to discuss law and foreign policy as it relates to actual legal practice in the promotion of global understanding presents a fitting opportunity to further the legacy of Chris's style of diplomacy and his life's work," says Tom Stevens, Ambassador Stevens' brother.  "Chris loved his UC Hastings years, and he maintained his strong connection to the school throughout his life. His friends from that time have become my family's friends. It's really significant to all of us that we're carrying on this relationship with UC Hastings, and we are grateful to the school for holding this event."

"The Ambassador was performing the highest role that a lawyer is called upon to perform, public service," said UC Hastings Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu. "He and I communicated when he was appointed Ambassador. He had been looking forward to sharing his experiences with students when he returned. Like everyone in our nation, we were shocked to learn of recent events."

The Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens Symposium Fund has been established to receive donations from those who have expressed interest in supporting a memorial for Ambassador Stevens, and moneys that are raised through this effort will be dedicated to the Symposium.
