UC Hastings Hosts Fashion Law Panel

UC Hastings College of the Law will hold its first event on fashion law Jan. 17, 2013. The panel discussion, designed for both practicing lawyers and students interested in the field, is sponsored by Hastings Communication and Entertainment Law Journal and Ebitu Law Group P.C.

The free panel discussion will look at the growing field a fashion law, a combination of intellectual property (copyright, trademark, trade secrets), employment and labor law, and import/export law. The panel will be moderated by Uduak Oduok ’01, a former fashion model who is now a partner at Ebitu Law Group.Uduak Oduok

Speakers include Staci Riordan, a partner and chair of the Fashion Law Practice Group at Fox Rothschild in Los Angeles; Brian Scheyer, a fashion designer with the leading San Francisco brand gr.dano; and Mariessa Terrell, founder of the Fashion Law and Policy Center in Washington, D.C.

With Levi’s and The Gap both headquartered in San Francisco, “UC Hastings is perfectly positioned to lead the way when it comes to fashion law in Northern California, and can move the conversation and emerging field forward,” said Oduok.

The event will be held at 6 PM at the Alumni Reception Center in Mary Kay Kane Hall, 200 McAllister. Admission is free, and there will be a reception following the program.

Your Skills: Writing a Brief--Lessons From Literature

Tell the truth — lay out all of the facts, and all of the law — but tell it slant. Be artful in word choice, for every detail counts. Consider at the outset even small choices like what to name the parties — are they plaintiff and defendant, victim and prisoner, or Mr. Smith and Officer Jones? Judiciously use the passive voice to subtly downplay the negative, while preferring active voice generally, and especially in order to accentuate the positive.
