Checking In: 3L Makes Civic Center her "Second Classroom"

          3L Annie "The Mayor" Moskovian

Meet Annie Moskovian, a UC Hastings 3L who's taken full advantage of the college's proximity to local courts, earning two judicial externships and organizing a symposium for cutting-edge scholars and practitioners as she networks with local alumni.

While a student at UC Hastings, Moskovian has made the city’s Civic Center her second classroom. The college’s unique location, in the heart of the city, amid state and federal courts, provides unparalleled access to a hands-on legal education and coveted jobs with local courts.

San Francisco boasts an impressive concentration of local, state, federal, and administrative courts. UC Hastings is within blocks of City Hall, the civil and criminal Superior Courts, the federal district court, the 9th Circuit, and state Supreme Court, in addition to a host of administrative agencies such as the state Public Utilities Commission.

A Los Angeles native, Moskovian was drawn north to UC Hastings. “I liked that UC Hastings was close to all the courts. With the exception of the U.S. Supreme Court, we have all types of courts here. The school and its location are unique from that perspective,” Moskovian said.

She took full advantage of UC Hastings’ venue from her very first weeks at the college. “I’ve sat in on trials and hearings. I attended an en banc hearing of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. I like having access to the judicial system. It puts my classroom learning into perspective, and makes it more tangible.”

Moskovian, 23, dove into life at UC Hastings as a 1L, joining various student groups and eventually the Hastings Constitutional Law Quarterly, the nation’s oldest law journal devoted exclusively to constitutional law. She met one of her mentors, San Francisco attorney Susan Mosk ‘90, at one of the 30 or so “Six at Six” dinners hosted by alumni. The two were drawn by their similar names, but hit it off personally. Mosk has continued to offer Moskovian moral support and career advice.

UC Hastings has a huge alumni network, including many alums in the San Francisco Bay Area eager to share their career knowledge with current students. Moskovian met another prominent alumnus, California Supreme Court Justice Marvin Baxter ’66, at a dinner organized by the Armenian Law Students Association, of which she is a member. Like Moskovian, Baxter is the descendant of Armenian immigrants. Moskovian’s parents emigrated to Los Angeles in 1989, and she was born soon thereafter.

She kept in to touch with the Justice, and parlayed the contact into a judicial externship with the court, where she now works as a 3L, analyzing petitions for review in criminal and civil cases, and helping draft memoranda and preliminary responses to cases for the associate justice.

There she also works with Carin Fujisaki ’85, a Judicial Staff Attorney who serves on the UC Hastings Board of Directors. “I really appreciate and am thankful for the alumni mentors I have. They’ve always been there to reassure me, and guide me at all stages of my law school career.”

Her contacts developed further when she served as Executive Symposium Editor of the Hastings Constitutional Law Quarterly, and organized, with others, one of the school’s largest and most successful symposia, on the Myriad gene patent case pending before the U.S Supreme Court.

The panelists included Professor Robin Feldman, Chief Judge of the 9th Circuit Alex Kozinski, and Silicon Valley practitioners at the heart of similar cases. “We were able to attract more than 200 attendees, including state and federal court staff, in part because of our location,” Moskovian said. Moskovian’s work with Kozinski turned into a post-graduate externship with the Chief Judge, which she begins in August.

Moskovian has enthusiastically made San Francisco her home. She says she loves the city’s mercurial weather and bustling urban vibe in addition to the career opportunities it has offered her.

Moskovian traces her steps around the city on Foursquare, where she’s a constant presence, with more than 5,000 check-ins and 41 mayorships, with badges from UC Hastings, the Tower, the Skyroom, Clara Foltz Lounge, Civic Center, the Supreme Court, the offices of the Constitutional Law Quarterly, and local hangouts such as McAllister Market, Naan ‘N Curry and neighborhood food trucks.

There’s one more badge she needs to earn while at UC Hastings. She’ll be "checking in" at the Nob Hill Masonic Center on May 11, 2013 for commencement.
