          CGRS Expands Human Rights Work with UN Trust Fund Grant

          The United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women has awarded a grant to the Danish Refugee Council in Tajikistan and Afghanistan, two leading NGOs in the region, and the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies at UC Hastings to address violence against displaced and refugee women and girls in the two countries.

          "Most of the refugees in Tajikistan arrive from the country's war-torn neighbor to the south, Afghanistan, where women and girls face gender-based violence and discrimination," says Blaine Bookey, CGRS Associate Director. "CGRS will be training and conducting workshops on providing legal aid to trauma survivors in Afghanistan and Tajikistan. In addition, we will research and prepare a report on laws protecting women from violence in the two countries, analyzing how these laws have been implemented, and proposing recommendations for improvement."

          "The UN Trust Fund received over 2,400 concept papers in response to their call for proposals, and funded only 17 of them, less than 1%," explains CGRS Director Karen Musalo. "We are honored to be working on this important project for the next two years with the Danish Refugee Council and its local partners."
