Adjunct Professor Jonathan Schmidt is a federal prosecutor serving in the Securities Unit of the United States Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of California. Before serving in the Securities Unit, Professor Schmidt was the chief of the Office’s National Security Unit. From 2003-2005, Professor Schmidt spent 19 months in Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina as an international prosecutor. As an international prosecutor, he tried the first war crime trial tried in the Bosnia Herzegovina’s new State Court. This was also the first war crime trial against a Mujahedeen fighter.
Professor Schmidt has extensive trial experience and has tried over 70 jury trials. He also serves as a court appointed mediator and early neutral evaluator for the Northern District of California’s ADR program. At Hastings, Professor Schmidt has taught LWR, moot court and a seminar on the international prosecution of war crimes.
