UC Hastings Hosts 20th Anniversary of the Conference of Asian Pacific American Law Faculty

UC Hastings is proud to serve as host for the 20th anniversary of the Conference of Asian Pacific American Law Faculty (CAPALF), Feb. 1-2, 2013.

In 1994, CAPALF was created to give Asian Pacific American law faculty a uniquely supportive and relevant forum for the presentation of scholarship, discussion of timely and important legal, policy, political, and social issues, pedagogic demonstrations, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The theme of the 2013 conference is “Looking Back to the Future: Twenty Years of APAs in the Academy.”

"This conference has made my career as a professor," says UC Hastings Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu. "I've been involved from the beginning. When I started in the academy, there were few Asian Americans studying law and virtually no Asian Americans teaching law. I found a community through CAPALF."

On Friday, Feb. 1st, there will be a plenary panel on APA scholarship, a small group breakout session, the keynote speaker luncheon, concurrent Work-in-Progress sessions, a plenary panel on gender representations of APAs, the Vincent Chin Trial Re-Enactment with Second Circuit Judge Denny Chin and Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu, and a Skyroom reception that includes the inaugural presentation of the Eric Yamamoto Emerging Scholar Award and a recognition of Korematsu Day.

On Saturday, Feb. 2nd, the conference continues with more Work-in-Progress sessions, a plenary on the Asian American movement and pan-Asian identity, and a luncheon featuring the second annual presentation of the Chris Iijima Teacher and Mentor Award and the Keith Aoki Asian American Jurisprudence Award.
