          College Raises Thousands to Help Fight Local Hunger

          The UC Hastings team surpassed its annual goal for its involvement in the Food From the Bar campaign, which ran from April 29 to May 24 in San Francisco.

          Food from the Bar, managed in conjunction with the San Francisco and Marin Food Banks, is the legal community’s largest food and fundraising drive. In its 22nd year, this drive raises critical funds to fight hunger in San Francisco and Marin. Donations go directly to the San Francisco and Marin Food Banks to help feed hungry children in the community.

          As of May 24, the UC Hastings team added up 2,605 “points,” eclipsing its target of 2,544 points.

          On two separate Saturdays in May, members of the UC Hastings community came together to participate in group volunteer shifts. They packed boxes of food for elderly locals on a fixed income. During the first shift, in just three hours together, volunteers packed enough food for 1,500 individuals. Thanks goes out to the 23 students, staff members, alumni, and family members who attended to help out. Amongst them were also Professors Elizabeth Hillman and Heather Field, and Carin Fujaski, Board of Directors member.

          In addition, the Bureau of Fun & Goodwill promoted the campaign to students, faculty and staff, as well as to team members who volunteered at the Food Bank. Other teams included local law firms and corporations.

          The San Francisco and Marin Food Banks provide vital support to more than 225,000 people in the community who are struggling to make ends meet. This year, they will distribute 45 million pounds of food, and more than half of it will be fresh fruit and vegetables direct from the farm. For every $1 donated, the Food Banks can distribute $6 worth of food, thanks to volunteers, farming partners, and food donors, as well as the Food Bank’s ability to source quality food for pennies on the dollar.
