UC Hastings Hosts Panels on Human Rights Advocacy, Asylum and Discrimination

Professors Naomi Roht-Arriaza, Chimene Keitner and Karen Musalo are among the speakers at a two-day conference on international human rights advocacy June 11-12, 2013, at UC Hastings College of the Law, co-sponsored by the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies (CGRS).

Incorporating international norms and human rights mechanisms into advocacy strategies can yield powerful results in advancing civil rights and social justice, said Musalo, who serves as Director of CGRS.

“This conference features some of the country’s most experienced practitioners and scholars,” she said. Topics include the use of United Nations human rights mechanisms, the Inter-American Human Rights System, and litigation of international norms in domestic fora, as well as implementation of human rights standards through policy reform at the local and state levels, and documentation of human rights abuses.

The program is designed for public interest and criminal defense attorneys, as well as advocates focused on civil rights and social justice issues. The training is approved for 10 credit hours of Continuing Legal Education.

The event is co-sponsored by CGRS, the International Justice Resource Center, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Center for Justice & Accountability, and the U.S. Human Rights Network.
