Professor Scott Dodson will travel to Genoa, Italy next month.

In late November, UC Hastings Professor Scott Dodson will deliver a lecture on U.S. civil pleadings at the University of Genoa, Italy as part of a multi-year lecture series on U.S. procedure.

The title of Professor Dodson's lecture is "Pleadings and the Litigation Marketplace," which builds upon his previous work, and recent empirical developments, on the Supreme Court's decisions in Bell Atlantic v. Twombly and Ashcroft v. Iqbal.

"Pleading jurisprudence is very hot right now," says Professor Dodson. "Much ink has been spilled in academic commentary on Twombly and Iqbal, and it is time to synthesize that commentary and put it into context. Civil litigation is a dynamic marketplace of reactions between parties, courts, and the law. Some of the commentary has overlooked the effects and complications of that dynamism. My lecture tries to show why the marketplace context is important to our understanding of the decisions, and I look forward to the reactions of my friends and colleagues overseas."

The lecture series is organized by Professor Angelo Dondi of the law faculty at the University of Genoa. Prior lectures have been delivered by UC Hastings Professors Richard L. Marcus and Geoffrey Hazard, among other prominent civil procedure scholars. The lectures are expected to be translated into Italian and published in a compendium.

"It is quite an honor to be invited to give one of these lectures," notes Professor Marcus. "Domestic conversations about civil procedure are certainly important, but we have the potential to make a global impact when we engage with proceduralists in other countries. Professor Dodson is a terrific addition to that endeavor."
