          Thinkers & Doers: Oct. 25, 2013

A regular feature of alumni, students, and friends of UC Hastings in the news.

          Peter Keane

Peter Keane, a longtime visiting professor, has been named to the San Francisco Ethics Commission by City Attorney Dennis Herrera. Keane, a former president of the Bar Association of San Francisco and former Chief Assistant Public Defender, also previously served as a San Francisco Police Commissioner.

In 1980, at the request of then Mayor Dianne Feinstein he drafted San Francisco's "Handgun Control Ordinance" which was adopted into law by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. In 1994, at the request of then Speaker of the State Assembly Willie L. Brown, Jr., he authored Proposition 79 which amended California's Constitution to reform and restructure the Commission on Judicial Performance, the agency that oversees California's Judiciary. Prop 79 passed both houses of the legislature with near unanimity and California voters enacted it overwhelmingly in the statewide general election.

          Joseph Gratz

When is hacking good? "Many legitimate computer security researchers test the security of systems in order to make that security better -- an activity that many would describe as hacking," Joseph Gratz, an adjunct professor of law at UC Hastings College of the Law, told TechNewsWorld.

"That kind of hacking is the best way to make all of us safer as users of computer networks," Gratz pointed out.

Joseph GratzAt issue is the United States District Court for the District of Idaho, which has ordered the seizure of data from the computers of white hat hacking firm South Fork Security in response to a lawsuit brought by Battelle.

Gratz, a litigator with Durie Tangri in San Francisco, is an adjunct professor at UC Hastings. His greatest accomplishment: Joe led his team to victory in the 2008 Electronic Frontier Foundation Pub Quiz, breaking the tie with Google, Stanford, and Berkeley by recalling that the speech at issue in the First Amendment case Hustler Magazine v. Falwell, 485 U.S. 46 (1988), was a parody of a Campari ad.
