UC Hastings Ranks #36 on National Journal's List of "Go-To" Law Schools

Hiring stats improve; some 12% of graduates work at NLJ 250 law firms.

The National Law Journal is out with its list of “Go-To Law Schools” based on the percentage of 2013 graduates who took jobs at NLJ 250 firms—the nation’s largest law firms, by headcount, in the National Law Journal’s annual survey. UC Hastings ranks 36th in the nation, up from 40th last year.

Additionally, the college ranked 39th in associates promoted to partner in 2013. The journal noted that large law firm associate hiring ticked up for the second straight year in a row. “Among the 50 schools most popular with hiring firms, 27 percent of graduates landed associate jobs—up from 25 percent in 2012,” the journal said. That marks the highest hiring percentage since 2010.

According to the NLJ data, UC Hastings had 45 first-year associates at NLJ 250 firms. Slightly more than 12% of UC Hastings graduates work at NLJ 250 firms, according to the journal. The previous year, 9.71 percent of UC Hastings graduates were working at NLJ 250 firms.

          Focus on Experimental Apprenticeships

The National Law Journal’s special coverage on law schools also included a story on learning the law through apprenticeships. Paul Lippe, CEO of OnRampSystems is featured for his experiment in hiring four dozen recent graduates to tackle an 18-month project helping a global bank improve management and execution of contracts while complying a maze of international regulation.

If all goes according to plan, the NLJ reported, the bank will end up more efficient and graduates will acquire real-world experience before moving to other jobs or further up the OnRamp systems ladder.

“It’s really a great experiment,” the NLJ quoted Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu as saying. “We’re not sure if it will work out, but it’s important that people be willing to take risks in this environment.” UC Hastings is among the participating law schools.

UC Hastings has long focused on experiential education through its clinics and many externship programs, including Lawyers for America. Read more here.
