          San Francisco, February 7, 2014:

The Blackstone Charitable Foundation today awarded The Institute for Innovation Law at UC Hastings a $100,000 grant to fund the Startup Legal Garage—which has been named one of the most innovative law school programs in the country.

The Startup Legal Garage is a leading-edge program in which UC Hastings students provide free legal services to startup companies in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, with a focus on minority and female entrepreneurs. The student work is supervised pro bono by attorneys at major law firms.

The grants, totaling $1.6 million, were made through the second annual Blackstone Organizational Grants Program, which targets organizations that focus on entrepreneurship and innovation. Through this program, The Blackstone Charitable Foundation is helping innovative organizations that directly support entrepreneurs to pilot, expand or replicate projects or programs that will catalyze the growth of successful businesses, industries, and communities. “At Blackstone, we believe that a robust global economy depends upon a pipeline of creative, talented, and inspired entrepreneurs,” said Amy Stursberg, Executive Director of the Blackstone Charitable Foundation. “Through this program, we are able to direct the Foundation’s resources towards helping entrepreneurship flourish across the nation and globally, and support entrepreneurs on a path toward innovation and discovery.”

“Both students and startups have been clamoring to participate in the Startup Legal Garage,” said the Institute for Innovation Law Director Robin Feldman. “The Blackstone Charitable Foundation grant allows us to expand to meet the overwhelming demand and create a playbook of our model for other law schools nationwide. It is a tremendous honor to be chosen by the Foundation.”

The grantees were selected through a Request for Proposals (RFP) issued by the Blackstone Charitable Foundation as part of its 5-year, $50 million Entrepreneurship Initiative.
