The Institute for Innovation Law at UC Hastings is an institute dedicated to promoting data-driven law-making—allowing courts, legislators, and regulators to make informed decisions using reliable and objective analysis—and creating the active classroom.

The Startup Legal Garage, the flagship program of the Institute for Innovation Law at UC Hastings College of the Law, has been awarded a $121,500 grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the world’s largest foundation dedicated to advancing entrepreneurship.

Support from the Kauffman Foundation enables the Startup Legal Garage to collect and analyze data about the types of legal issues early-stage companies encounter nationwide. The program will provide policy makers and regulatory bodies with the data and analysis they need to make informed decisions that support innovation and entrepreneurship.

The Startup Legal Garage, named one of the most innovative law school programs in the country, is a unique model where UC Hastings students work under the supervision of top corporate and intellectual property attorneys to provide early-stage companies with free legal services.

The program focuses on traditionally underrepresented and underserved women and minority entrepreneurs. Working closely with entrepreneurs during the critical stage of their business provides the Startup Legal Garage with the opportunity to gather information about legal issues that hinder innovation and entrepreneurship.

          Legal Support for Early-Stage Companies

“In the process of facilitating free legal support and services for early-stage companies, the Institute is in a unique position to capture important information about them. We are honored to be recognized by the Kauffman Foundation, whose support enables us to advance our knowledge about the legal issues early-stage companies face,” said Robin Feldman, Professor and Director of the Institute for Innovation Law.

Robin FeldmanIn addition to supporting data collection and analysis, the Kauffman Foundation grant will fund the development of a standardized data-collection template. The program also will publish its findings, as well as share the underlying data for academic and research purposes. This grant follows on the heels of a grant from the Blackstone Charitable Foundation to significantly expand the number of early-stage companies the Startup Legal Garage serves. This growth in the number of companies served enables the program to collect and analyze data from more companies in order to provide policymakers with the specific information they need to make decisions that propel entrepreneurial success.
