Institute for Innovation Law Welcomes New Faces

Laura Grant '86 takes helm as new Executive Director, Alice Armitage joins as Senior Research Fellow. Online: http://innovation.uchastings.edu/

Message from Robin Feldman, Professor of Law, Harry & Lillian Hastings Chair, and Director of the Institute for Innovation Law

The Institute for Innovation Law would like to welcome Laura Grant and Alice Armitage as well as to acknowledge our research fellows. (Positions outside of the Executive Director are funded by grants, gifts and awards).

Laura Grant is taking the helm as the new Executive Director of the Institute for Innovation Law. Laura is a UC Hastings alumna ’86 who has been a Senior Counsel at Wilson Sonsini for many years. Her prior experience includes five years at Skadden Arps. Her knowledge of UC Hastings, and of Silicon Valley law firm practice, as well as her fabulous writing skills, will be a great asset to the Institute.

Alice Armitage also joins the Institute as a Senior Research Fellow. Alice is a Yale Law School alumna ’80 and the first woman Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Law Journal. Her early career included years at Arnold & Porter and the Treasury Department, and she has taught as an adjunct at UCLA. More recently, Alice was founder and CEO of a mobile safety app startup and has provided consulting for other startup companies. We are extremely fortunate to have Alice on the team.

For those of you who haven’t met our wonderful Research Fellows, recent UC Hastings alumni Ariane Mohamadi and Timothy Yim have been working with two of the Institute’s Programs, the Startup Legal Garage and the Privacy & Technology Project. They have been joined by Research Fellow, Brian Pascal, who holds an undergraduate degree in physics from Duke and a JD from Michigan. Brian’s work experience includes Palantir and Stanford’s Center for Internet & Society. Together, Brian, Ariane and Tim bring a wealth of expertise and experience in the privacy and startup worlds, and all three will be continuing on with the Institute in the coming year.

Finally, the Institute is sad to announce the departure of Charles Belle, also a UC Hastings alumnus. Charles was the Executive Director of the Institute and Research Director of the Privacy & Technology Project. Charles has been with the Institute since its inception and with the Institute’s predecessor programs for 3 years. He was instrumental in founding the Privacy & Technology Project in 2012. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to Charles for all of his work on everything from privacy to the Startup Legal Garage. We are tremendously grateful for all of the time and energy he has dedicated to building these programs, and wish him the greatest success as he moves on in his career.
