Reappointment of Chancellor and Dean Frank H. Wu

Memorandum from Marci Dragun '86, Chair of UC Hastings Board of Directors, to Faculty, Staff, Students, and Alumni.

On behalf of the UC Hastings Board of Directors, I am delighted to announce that on June 6, 2014, the Board unanimously approved the reappointment of Chancellor and Dean Frank H. Wu to a second term, extending through June 2020. Dean Wu has been a strong and tireless leader for UC Hastings, and is uniquely qualified to advance the college’s success in adapting to the changing marketplace for legal services and higher education.

During his first term, Dean Wu led a critical strategic planning effort, and worked hard to communicate its importance to stakeholders and to implement it. Following his vision to build on our historical strengths in scholarship and education, the college has adopted a number of ambitious programs to promote the experiential and global training of our students, and their development as leaders and problem-solvers. These efforts have been successful despite the challenges of the recent recession and reductions in public funding. Dean Wu and his management team have strived to maintain fiscal discipline, which has kept the institution academically vibrant and financially healthy without tuition increases.

Dean Wu is a visible and effective spokesperson for UC Hastings and legal education. He has worked diligently and enthusiastically to improve alumni relations and cultivation, resulting in a broader and stronger base of alumni supporters and record fundraising. Dean Wu is a nationally recognized thought leader and deserves high marks as an energetic ambassador to the UC Hastings community, our peer institutions and oversight organizations, and state and local governments.

To aid in its evaluation of Dean Wu’s reappointment, the Board appointed a Decanal Review Committee composed of three directors and two faculty members. The Review Committee sent a confidential survey to faculty, staff, students, and members of the alumni boards. This survey yielded 223 responses, which overall reflected overwhelmingly positive assessments of Dean Wu and which contributed to the Review Committee’s unanimous recommendation for his reappointment. The Board and the Review Committee thank all responders for their comments, which have been generally summarized and discussed with Dean Wu, including the areas in which some believe he could devote additional attention.

Please join the Board and me in congratulating Chancellor and Dean Frank H. Wu on his reappointment. We are confident that his continued leadership will best serve our students and institutional goals, and we look forward to working with him and with you to ensure that UC Hastings remains the leader in rebooting legal education.
