UC Hastings College of the Law is pleased to announce that Professor Jared Ellias will join the full-time faculty, effective July 1, 2014, as a tenure-track Associate Professor.

Ellias’s course offerings will add strength in curricular areas, such as business and commercial law, that are critical to preparing students for the practice of law in the changing markets they will face upon graduation. His broad research and teaching interests enhance UC Hastings’s strength in this critical area.

“My research focuses primarily on corporate bankruptcy law and business reorganizations,” says Professor Ellias. “I combine my experience as a bankruptcy lawyer with empirical research methods to develop new tools that provide fresh insight into Chapter 11. Much of my current work uses novel data to test assumptions about the bankruptcy process that are widely held by market participants and scholars.

“Detailed data on large bankruptcy cases are notoriously difficult to collect,” explains Ellias. “This leaves important gaps in the literature where empirical evidence is needed. To facilitate my research, I hand-collected a new dataset of large firms that filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and 2010. These data form the basis of my current work, and thus far, my results suggest that some of the conventional wisdom that shapes corporate finance, bankruptcy policy, and the scholarly discourse should be re-examined.”

“Professor Ellias brings insight and energy to our business law faculty at a time when many employers and students are interested in his core expertise: bankruptcy and corporate governance,” says Provost and Academic Dean Elizabeth L. Hillman. “He comes to us from Stanford Law School, where he won rave teaching reviews. His scholarship is terrific and original, and he relies on empirical evidence to build his analyses, which means he has and will continue to develop connections to the bench, bar, and policy makers. We are delighted to welcome him to our community.”
