Carin Fujisaki ’85 Elected Chair of UC Hastings Board of Directors

“Each member of the Board of Directors has contributed hundreds of hours to the college, and we are grateful for their service.” –-Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu

The UC Hastings Board of Directors unanimously elected Carin Fujisaki ’85 Chair of the Board and Thomas Gede ’81 as Vice Chair at its meeting Friday, June 6, 2014.

Ms. Fujisaki, of Walnut Creek, served as Current Vice Chair of the Board. Ms. Fujisaki was appointed in September 2003. Ms. Fujisaki serves as a judicial staff attorney for the Honorable Marvin R. Baxter of the California Supreme Court, and her work spans the entire range of civil and criminal cases, and death penalty appeals. Previously, she worked as a litigation associate at the San Francisco law firm of Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Robertson & Falk. Ms. Fujisaki has been active with the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area and other local bar associations, most recently in mentoring law students and new attorneys. She also served on the Commission for Judicial Nominees Evaluation, the State Bar body that evaluates candidates seeking judicial appointments. Ms. Fujisaki earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1985 from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1981 from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Mr. Gede, of Davis, was appointed to the Board of Directors in September 2009. Since 2006, he has been a principal with Bingham Consulting Group and of counsel at Bingham McCutchen LLP. From 2000 to 2006, he was the executive director of the Conference of Western Attorneys General, and from 1987 to 2000, he served in the California Office of the Attorney General as a special assistant attorney general and deputy attorney general in the criminal division and the government law section. Prior to that service, Mr. Gede was a judicial attorney for Associate Justices Edwin Regan and Keith Sparks at the California Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District. Mr. Gede earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University.

The Board thanked Ms. Fujisaki and Mr. Gede for their long years of service to the college. While she is not leaving the board, Marci Dragun ’86, outgoing Board Chair, said she is confident the board is in good hands. "I've worked with Carin and Tom for years, and value their devotion and strong leadership."

Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu noted that the Board, under their combined leadership, has wisely shepherded the college through a changing legal education marketplace. “Each member of the Board of Directors has contributed hundreds of hours to the college, and we are grateful for their service.”

University of California Hastings College of the Law was established by statute in 1878 and is governed by a Board of Directors. With the exception of one Board member who, as specified by statute, shall always be an heir or representative of Serranus Clinton Hastings, the members of the Board are appointed by the Governor of the State of California, confirmed by the State Senate and serve for 12 years.
