Mr. Lau was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, earning his B.S.B.A. in Economics, Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he earned his M.B.A. in Finance and the University of California, Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, where he earned his J.D. in 1977. Mr. Lau's primary areas of focus in his practice of law are Civil Litigation, Real Estate, Collections, Creditor Representation, Bankruptcy, Banking and Corporate Law, Trusts and Estates.
Mr. Lau is a member of the Hawaii State Bar Association - Real Property and Financial Services, Corporate Counsel, Corporations and Securities, Bankruptcy, Probate and Estate Planning Section, and is a Founding Director of the Collection Section of the Bar. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute, the American Trial Lawyers Association and the International Association of Defense Counsel. He is also the Vice Dean of the Consular Corps of Hawaii, the Honorary Consul for Belgium in Honolulu, a Trustee and Past Treasurer & Past Secretary of the University of Hawaii Foundation where he presently Chairs its Board Development and Governance Committee, a Trustee of the University of California Hastings College of the Law Foundation, a Director of the University of Hawaii Shidler College of Business Alumni Association, he serves as the President of the Lehigh University Alumni Club of Hawaii, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Hawaii Youth Soccer Association. He is licensed to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the U.S. Bankruptcy Appellate Panel of the Ninth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court and is a Hawaii Circuit Court Appointed Arbitrator. Mr. Lau is also a member of the Federal Circuit Bar Association - Bench & Bar and is presently Legal Counsel, Past President and Emeritus Trustee of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii. He also serves as a Sister City Liaison for Honolulu with a number of cities in China and is a Federal Advisor to the Hawaii Pacific Export Council. Of interesting note, he has lectured at Beijing Foreign Studies University School of Law, at East China University of Political Science and Law and as a visiting professor at Tianjin Normal University’s Jinggu College.
