Marci Dragun '86, Carin Fujisaki '85 Elected Chair and Vice Chair of UC Hastings Board

Marci Dragun ’86 was elected Chair of the UC Hastings Board of Directors, and Carin T. Fujisaki ’85 was elected Vice Chair. Both votes were unanimous. The women assume their new roles on the board July 1.

Dragun is a Legislative Aide for San Mateo County Supervisor Warren Slocum. She was previously Executive Director of the Lincoln Club of Northern California, and has more than 30 years experience working on local, state and federal political campaigns. Dragun has served on the UC Hastings Board of Directors since 2006. She replaces Donald Bradley ’68, as chair. He will remain on the board.

Fujisaki is a judicial staff attorney for the Honorable Marvin R. Baxter ‘66 of the California Supreme Court. She previously practiced law at Howard Rice in San Francisco, and served on the Commission for Judicial Nominees Evaluation, the State Bar body that evaluates all judicial candidates seeking state appointments. She has served on the UC Hastings board since 2003.

Marci Dragun '86, ChairDragun said the board takes a “team approach” to the governance and fiscal stability of the college, and works closely with the dean. “Frank Wu is a visionary and exactly what the college needs to take it into the future. Our strategic plan, adopted in 2010, gives us a roadmap for success,” she said.

The Board of Directors is the governing authority of UC Hastings,” explained Chancellor and Dean Frank H. Wu. “They are the equivalent of the UC Regents, because of our unique independent status. Their leadership of the college is crucial. I work closely with them and value their role as the decision-making body on policy matters, and individually their wise advice and counsel.”

“Marci Dragun has had experience at the highest levels of state and national public policy advocacy. Carin Fujisaki has been dedicated to the quality of the academics at the College,” Wu said. ”It's been a pleasure working with them.”

Dragun said her work with the all-volunteer board is very meaningful to her. “UC Hastings has so much to offer, to alumni, those who work for the college, and especially for our students. Being one of the schools that focuses on public service, it has a very important place in legal education. Our students are all so hard-working, and have a lot to offer for the future of the legal profession,” she said.

Carin Fujisaki '85, Vice ChairFujisaki echoed that sentiment. “The degree I earned from UC Hastings opened the door to so many professional and leadership opportunities for me,” Fujisaki said. “I was grateful to join the board for the chance to give something back and to work toward developing greater and more diverse opportunities for our current and future students.”

University of California Hastings College of the Law was established by statute in 1878 and is governed by its Board of Directors. With the exception of one board member who, as specified by statute, shall always be an heir or representative of Serranus Clinton Hastings, the members of the board are appointed by the Governor of the State of California, confirmed by the State Senate and serve for 12 years.
