Containing Health Care Costs: Recent Progress and Remaining Challenges

The Brookings Institution cites UCSF/UC Hastings Consortium research proposing several solutions for improving the transparency of pricing in healthcare.

Solutions proposed by Professor Jaime King include antitrust litigation to reduce the market power of certain insurance companies and providers to drive up prices and obscure them from consumers; and incentivizing price transparency through legislation and regulatory action.

Market solutions such as making transparent and releasing data on quality and prices of providers to employers would enable them to demand lower-cost and higher quality health plans, hospitals and providers, the study cited.

For more from the Brookings Institution's analysis of the Consortium's research, read here.
