For each of the next three years, some 25 members of the entering class will be awarded renewable scholarships from a new $1.25 million fund established by an alumnus.

The anonymous donor chose to support deserving students for the full three years of their legal education as a way “to help those who are less fortunate attend law school and go on to change the world,” he says. “There are so many gaps between the haves and the have-nots, and the key to closing these gaps is education.”

The new scholarship fund will be used in full within the next several years. The idea is “to have an immediate impact,” explains the donor. “I see it as an investment in human capital. I wanted to give back to the institution that has helped me in so many ways.”

According to Greg Canada, assistant dean of admissions, this gift could not have come at a more opportune time. “Law schools across the board are engaged in a fierce competition for the best students,” Canada says. “Now that we are able to offer these scholarships to outstanding students, we are in a better position to attract and retain the kinds of candidates we want to see—students who have demonstrated academic excellence and contribute to their communities.”

Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu adds that such scholarships are critical to ensuring the law school’s future. “State funding for UC Hastings has decreased significantly over the past generation, and tuition has increased proportionally,” he says. “We give out more than $15 million in grants and scholarships in a typical year. Private gifts to support our students are our top fundraising priority. Deepening our commitment to offering access to the highest-quality legal education depends on scholarships such as these. We are extremely grateful for the generosity and vision of this alumnus.”
