UC Hastings Welcomes International Visiting Scholars Marco Olsen of Brazil and Hiroshi Sase of Japan

Professors Marco Olsen and Hiroshi Sase, both well-established international scholars, will spend the academic year researching and working at UC Hastings.

UC Hastings College of the Law welcomes two visiting international legal scholars for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Marco Olsen is from Brazil and a tenured professor at the University de Espirito Santo. His specialty is environmental law and he has extensive teaching experience in Latin America as well as in the U.S. Hiroshi Sase is from Japan and on the law faculty at Gakushuin University. His scholarly interest is in civil procedure.

“We are looking forward to an exciting year with Professors Olsen and Sase,” says Associate Academic Dean for Global Programs Richard Boswell. “We are pleased they have chosen to spend this year with us and are eager to learn from them.”

Professor Marco Olsen is a tenured Law Professor at the Federal University of Espírito Santo; he became Dean of the Law School in 2004. He received his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Brasília in 1986 and was admitted to the Brazilian Bar Association. He holds a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from American University Law School, and a Doctoral degree (SJD) from Pace University School of Law – Center for Environmental Legal Studies, both in International Environmental Law. He teaches International Law, International Environmental Law, International Human Rights, Comparative Environmental Law and Brazilian Constitutional and Administrative Law. Dr. Olsen is the author of many articles on environmental issues and of a leading textbook in the field of International Environmental Law.

Professor Hiroshi Sase has been with the law faculty at Gakushuin University since 2007. He holds a ML from the University of Tokyo, in Tokyo Japan, where he was a Research Associate from 2004-2007. He is the author of more than 15 law articles. He teaches civil procedure and bankruptcy.

The UC Hastings Visiting Scholar Program is an opportunity for foreign legal scholars, practitioners and members of the judiciary to spend up to one full academic year at the law school working on a legal research project. In the past, visiting scholars have worked on research ranging from comparative studies of corporate taxation and criminal procedure to international trade law and international human rights law. In addition to being provided with access to UC Hastings' extensive library collection, visiting scholars have the opportunity to meet with faculty members working in their field.
