Trailblazer Kamala Harris '89: Toward Justice for All

UC Hastings magazine has won a Gold Pearl Award from the Custom Content Council. Its Spring 2013 cover story on California Attorney General Kamala Harris ’89 won first place among custom publishing magazines with circulation of 50,000 or less.

Competition in the national contest included entries from Georgetown University School of Business and Morrison & Foerster, and household brands Coca-Cola, Ford, Whole Foods, and Walmart.

UC Hastings magazine is distributed to more than 22,000 alumni and friends of UC Hastings College of the Law. The magazine features in-depth reporting on students, faculty, alumni, and the college. Its most recent issue featured a profile of Professor Osagie Obasogie’s groundbreaking research on race.

“Alumni magazines serve many purposes,” says Sandra Thompson '01, UC Hastings Board of Director and Chair of the Advancement & Communications Committee. “At the same time, they’re not worth the paper they’re printed on if no-one is reading them. This is why UC Hastings goes out of our way twice a year to present impressive information about the school in a format that is engaging and visually compelling. The story about Attorney General Kamala Harris ’89 was a great read, as vivid as any article you might come across in The New Yorker or elsewhere, and it’s great to see this recognized.”

“UC Hastings has a proud narrative,” says Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu. “We are revamping legal education, and our students and alumni are changing the face of the profession. Our faculty produces engaged and influential scholarship. It’s a privilege to showcase these stories and more in a quality publication that attracts national attention.”

UC Hastings magazine is published by Diablo Custom Publishing (DCP). DCP Staff writer Angie Noel wrote the piece, with photography from Jim Block. Senior Communications Writer Ami Dodson edited the issue.
