Joan C. Williams

Professor Joan C. Williams was interviewed by Forbes about her new book, What Works for Women at Work.
Joan C. WilliamsSays Williams: “Ninety-six percent of the women I talked to [for the book] reported to us about one or more patterns of gender bias. When I started out, gender bias shaped my career profoundly. I was astonished it was still out there.”

Her most provocative takeaway: “The idea among Baby Boomer women that the most effective way to counter ‘tightrope’ bias is to use what I call gender judo. You take feminine stereotypes and flip them around so they propel you forward instead of hold you back.” Read more from Forbes.

In a separate interview, Williams explained to Reuters how the focus on face time at the office hurts women’s pay. “Workplace norms cement felt truths that link long hours with manliness, moral stature, and elite status.” Read more here.

Joseph Grodin

Joseph GrodinProfessor Emeritus Joseph Grodin will be honored next month as one of three winners of the 2014 Peggy Browning Award, given to “social justice champions who have distinguished themselves with passion and dedication to the rights and needs of workers and their families.” Read more here.

Brian Pascal

Brian Pascal, a fellow with the Institute for Innovation Law, talked to Ars Technica about the ongoing revelations about the NSA and its ties to the FBI. "Both intelligence and law enforcement organizations receive many, many tips, and a large part of their job is separating the signal from the noise.” Read more here.

Jennifer Keller

Jennifer KellerLitigator Jennifer Keller ’78 was named to Lawdragon’s prestigious 2013-2014 list of the 500 Leading Lawyers in America. She has tried more than 150 cases to verdict. She is the former president of the Orange County Bar Association, a trustee of Chapman University and a trustee of the UC Hastings Foundation. Her firm is Keller Kackauckas, in Irvine.

Elise Traynum

Elise Traynum ’86, general counsel of UC Hastings, will be inducted into the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Hall of Fame at California State University, San Bernardino.

Cecilia Blackfield

Cecilia BlackfieldEducator and philanthropist Cecilia Blackfield, who served on UC Hastings Board of Directors, was honored by Palama Settlement, at the community center’s inaugural annual gala Nov. 9, 2013. Mrs. Blackfield is the widow of the late William Blackfield ’38, who also served on the board. The couple established the William Blackfield Scholarship fund at UC Hastings. She was named an honorary alumna in 1999.
