Solicitor General Verrilli to Participate in UC Hastings "Legally Speaking" Interview Series

The series is co-sponsored with California Lawyer and features in-depth interviews with some of the nation’s most prominent lawyers.

Donald VerrilliOn January 29, UC Hastings will host Donald B. Verrilli, Jr., the 46th Solicitor General of the United States, in the latest installment of Legally Speaking.

General Verrilli will be interviewed from 3:30-4:30pm by Professor Rory Little in the Alumni Reception Center of Mary Kay Kane Hall. All members of the UC Hastings community are invited to attend the live event, which will be videotaped. The interview will be posted to the UC Hastings website and aired by UCTV at a later date.

In addition to participating in the Legally Speaking interview series, General Verrilli will also help the award-winning UC Hastings interscholastic moot court competitors by critiquing their performances.

“The Solicitor General is the most powerful practicing lawyer in the country,” said Professor Evan Lee, who co-directs the interview series. “He has a huge influence on what comes before the Supreme Court, and in what form. We are excited and honored to have him here to teach our students and to share his thoughts about the Court and his career.”

On January 26, 2011, President Obama nominated Verrilli to succeed Elena Kagan as Solicitor General after she was sworn into the position of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. On June 6, he was confirmed by the Senate, and was sworn in as Solicitor General of the United States on June 9, 2011.

General Verrilli and Professor Little served together as law clerks to U.S. Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan, Jr., in the 1984-85 Term. Verrilli served as Deputy Counsel to President Obama and as Associate Deputy Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice. Prior to his government service, he was a partner for many years in Jenner & Block, and co-chaired the firm’s Supreme Court practice. He handled numerous cases in the Supreme Court and the courts of appeals, including MGM Studios, Inc. v. Grokster, which established that companies building businesses based on the unauthorized distribution of copyrighted works can be liable for inducing infringement; and Wiggins v. Smith, which established principles governing the right to effective assistance of counsel at capital sentencing. General Verrilli is perhaps best known for his victory in the "Obamacare" decision, in which the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act.

This event is part of Legally Speaking, a series featuring in-depth interviews with prominent lawyers, judges and academics co-produced by UC Hastings College of the Law and California Lawyer. Previous installments of Legally Speaking can be viewed here.
