UC Hastings Magazine Wins CASE Award of Excellence for "Engaged Scholarship" Edition

UC Hastings magazine has won a Silver award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) for its Fall 2013 cover feature of Professor Osagie Obasogie.

The award was given by the CASE District VII board of directors and the CASE Awards of Excellence Committee. Colleges and universities around the West compete semiannually in this competition, which draws hundreds of entries.

The award highlighted the design and photography of the cover feature, which explores the work of Professor Obasogie. His groundbreaking scholarship on how the blind perceive race calls in to question the possibility of a post-racial society, and what that means for jurisprudence that attempts “colorblind” application of laws.

Last year, UC Hastings magazine won a Gold Pearl Award from the Custom Content Council for its Spring 2013 cover story of California Attorney General Kamala Harris ’89.

“Alumni magazines serve many purposes,” said Sandra Thompson '01, UC Hastings Board of Director and Chair of the Advancement & Communications Committee. “At the same time, they’re not worth the paper they’re printed on if no one is reading them. This is why UC Hastings goes out of our way twice a year to present impressive information about the school in a format that is engaging and visually compelling. Our content is as vivid as any article you might come across in The New Yorker or elsewhere, and it’s great to see this recognized.”

“UC Hastings has a proud narrative,” said Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu. “We are revamping legal education, and our students and alumni are changing the face of the profession. Our faculty produces engaged and influential scholarship. It’s a privilege to showcase these stories and more in a quality publication that attracts national attention.”

Both awards recognized the photography of Jim Block. “Jim has consistently provided a look and feel to our magazine that is gorgeous and engaging,” said Editorial Director Susan Kostal. “He brings out the best in all of us.”
