The Hastings Public Interest Law Foundation (HPILF) supports UC Hastings students who are pursuing careers in public interest law.
Last year, the HPILF Summer Grant Program provided 12 summer grants of $4,000 each to students who dedicated themselves to unpaid public interest work. But that left 73 applicants with no funding.
“This year, we at least hope to double the number of grants given out, but our ideal dream would be to give all 85 applicants grants,” said 2L Jessie Cassella, co-president of HPILF.
HPILF’s 30th Annual Gala and Auction, the group’s primary fundraising mechanism, Feb. 27 at Marines' Memorial Club, is your chance to help out.
The live and silent auctions feature donated trips, wine, and services; 100% of funds raised go toward grants.
Coveted Faculty Donations
The most popular auction items, which spark frenzied bidding, are events sponsored by faculty. Professor Roger Park is offering his 15th Annual Poker Tournament to up to 10 participants. The tournament takes place has his Russian Hill apartment and includes parking, pizza, beverages and prizes.
Professor David Takacs is offering dinner for four at Millennium Restaurant, the city’s premier vegan restaurant. He has also donated a personally guided trail run. Professor Evan Lee is donating tea and a guided tour of the Asian Art Museum. Professor John Diamond has once again donated his highly covered lunch for five at Max’s Opera Café, even though he is on a visiting professorship elsewhere this academic year. Chancellor & Dean Frank H. Wu and Professor Carol Izumi return to the lineup with their sushi dinner for five. And Professor Leo Martinez is back with his ever-popular Margarita Party for four (bring a designated driver).
Staff also contribute. Highlights include a homemade Moroccan dinner prepared by Fairuz Abdullah, Associate Director for Public Interest, Clerkship, and LLM programs.
Donated items include a pass to Vichy Hot Springs, a week-long stay for 12 at Pueblo Bonito resort in Cabo San Lucas, and a one-night stay at Hotel Kabuki. Other items include sports tickets, an autographed baseball from Brandon Belt, wine, cooking and climbing classes, and more.
