Alumni Invest in Tomorrow’s Litigation Heroes

Awards go to “two brilliant women who I believe will make excellent trial lawyers.” --Bruce Pfaff '79

Two deserving law students at UC Hastings College of the Law have received $10,000 Pfaff Trial Lawyer Scholarships from a generous alumnus.

Melissa Nold '14 and Rising 3L Christa Conry were selected based on their excellent course work in trial advocacy class work and their commitment to helping clients in civil trial work.

Bruce PfaffBruce Pfaff ’79 said he owes a substantial debt of gratitude to the law professors and fellow students who helped educate him while he attended UC Hastings: "I hope that this scholarship program will help students who have aptitude and desire to work as civil trial lawyers achieve their goals by offsetting the high cost of legal education."

Nold is currently preparing to take the July bar. She spent the last two years of law school working as a law clerk for the Law Offices of John L. Burris, working on Federal Civil Rights cases related to excessive force and police misconduct. She is the single parent of three children.

Conry is a staff editor on the Hastings Women’s Law Journal. Last summer, she interned at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission where she worked on pregnancy discrimination cases, among other issues.

“The recipients are two very brilliant women who I believe will make excellent trial lawyers,” Pfaff said.

Two Pfaff Trial Lawyer Scholarships are to be awarded each year to UC Hastings students.

Pfaff has been a trial lawyer since 1979, representing people injured or killed by wrongful conduct. He started his own practice, Pfaff, Gill & Ports, in Chicago in 1991.

In six cases, his clients have each received more than $10 million in jury verdicts. He is one of a handful of Illinois lawyers who have had such trial success. In addition to representing clients and managing the law firm, Pfaff writes Friend of the Court briefs for the Illinois Trial Lawyers' Association and for the American Board of Trial Advocates. He has been inducted as a Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, the International Society of Barristers, and the American Board of Trial Advocates.
