As a UC Hastings student, you are automatically enrolled in UC SHIP, and billed for the premium. If you already have health insurance that will continue through 2014-2015, and you wish to waive out of UC SHIP, you may apply for the waiver online. Please note that the University of California waiver criteria for 2014-2015 is different than that of the 2013-2014 academic year.
UC SHIP is a comprehensive major medical insurance plan, providing medical, counseling, prescription, vision and dental services. The year-round plan, which uses the Anthem Blue Cross PPO Network, is tailored to meet the health and wellness needs of graduate students.
Improvements to 2014-2015 UC SHIP Coverage
We all know how expensive health care can be. UC SHIP was developed to protect you from unexpected health care costs that could create a financial barrier to your graduation. UC makes no profit from UC SHIP—it’s financed by students, for students—and every year we do our best to improve the plan.
Beginning this year, as a member of our UC family, you can receive specialty care at low student rates at UC’s five nationally ranked medical centers. We’re proud that we can provide you with this exceptionally valuable benefit so that you’ll have fewer personal and financial worries if you ever become ill or get injured.
We’ve also increased coverage of psycho-educational testing for those who may need learning accommodations to a $3,000 lifetime maximum. This is a benefit few, if any, other health plans offer.
And this year, if you become ill or injured, UC SHIP will step in to pay 100% of your costs sooner because we now count deductibles, coinsurance, medical copays and prescription copays toward your annual out-of-pocket maximum. This is an example, along with expanded coverage of clinical trials and genetic testing, of how students continue to benefit from our decision to incorporate Affordable Care Act provisions into UC SHIP.
You can find the details of your UC SHIP coverage anywhere and anytime at www.ucop.edu/ucship. We’re here to help you keep a healthy focus and do great work this year. Enjoy the security of knowing that you will receive care from the healthcare providers in our UC family, with less worry about how much it will cost.
Student Health Insurance is included in your tuition fees. The insurance premiums for the 2014-2015 academic year are $1,729 for the Fall and $2,420 for the Spring/Summer, for a total of $4,149.
Students enrolled in UC SHIP may enroll their dependents in the plan. Dependent benefits differ slightly from student benefits. To learn more about UC SHIP Dependent Benefits, see the UC SHIP 2014- 2015 Dependent Medical Plan Summary.
In order to see a healthcare practitioner outside of Student Health Services, you must get a referral from a SHS medical / counseling practitioner.
Please call 415.565.4612 to schedule an appointment to meet with a doctor so that you can discuss referrals.
If you do not have a SHS referral, your insurance will not cover the cost of any visits outside of Student Health Services.
