- Classroom Component - 1 unit
Orientation - mandatory, two days prior to the first day of classes for the semester
- Spring 2013- January 8th & 9th.
- Fall 2013 – August 15th & 16th
- Pre- or Co-Requisite Requirement - 2 to 3 units
Complete course from the approved list, prior to or during the externship semester
- Fieldwork Component - 3 to 9 units
Full time externs - minimum of 12 weeks for at least 35 hours per week
Part-time externs – minimum of 12 weeks, work 45 hours per unit
How Do I Obtain an Externship?
- Students must have completed 3 semesters and have a 2.8 GPA
- Choose the Courts and Judges you may want to apply to
- Prepare your application
- Consider State or Federal court, trial or appellate or administrative
- Review the Courts and Judges where prior externs worked
- Review the surveys completed by prior externs describing their experiences (available in the Externships and Pro Bono Programs Office)
- Determine your top five placements, those you would be excited to accept if offered
- Timing – apply early in the semester prior to the semester you want to extern
- Review the online application for the Northern District of California – only submit to judges who have stated a preference for the online application
- For all other courts, submit the following:
-cover letter (specific to each Judge you apply to);
-resume;
-writing sample (5-10 pages);
-transcript
-list of three references (not letters of recommendation)
- Send applications to first round placements
- If unsuccessful, send application to second round placements
- Once you have obtained an externship, confirm eligibility for enrollment with Professor Nancy Stuart
- Enroll in classroom and fieldwork components through WebAdvisor
