Apply to the Summer Legal Institute

Thank you for your interest in the University of California Summer Legal Institute in San Francisco. The application instructions on this page are for students who wish to apply for any of the Summer Legal Institute’s credit-bearing courses. Individuals interested in either of the certificate programs should visit this page for application instructions.

Applications will accepted on a rolling basis until May 15, 2013. After May 15, please call (415) 565-4613 or e-mail records@uchastings.edu to ascertain if there is still space in the program. Prospective students are advised to apply as soon as possible as each course has limited enrollment.

Current UC Hastings students may register using WebAdvisor. All others must follow steps 1-4 below.

Step 1: Complete the Registration Form  (the Registration Form will be posted on this page in late January, 2013)

Print and complete the 2013 Summer Legal Institute Registration Form. There is a $75 registration fee; however the fee will be waived for anyone who registers before May 1. The registration fee is also waived for current UC Hastings students. Mail the form to the Records Office, UC Hastings College of the Law, 200 McAllister Street, San Francisco, CA 94102 or scan and e-mail the form to records@uchastings.edu.

Step 2: Review of Registration Materials

Upon receipt of your registration form, your details will be reviewed and you will be notified via e-mail about your enrollment.

Step 3: Securing Your Spot in the Summer Legal Institute

Admitted students must submit full payment ($800 times the number of units you have registered for) by the day before your first class begins to secure your enrollment in the Summer Legal Institute. There are two acceptable forms of payment:

  1. Pay ONLINE (highly preferred method)
  2. Applicants with United States residency may pay by personal check. International applicants may pay by bank draft, money order, or via the online method above.

Step 4: Current Law School Transcript and Letter of Good Standing

Along with the payment, applicants who are J.D. students currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. law school other than UC Hastings, or foreign law students not admitted to the UC Hastings LL.M. program must also provide the Summer Legal Institute with proof of good standing and a current transcript.

Step 5: Financial Aid:  Current UC Hastings students who plan to use financial aid to cover the cost of their summer course(s) should apply for aid at least two weeks in advance of the start of the session they have registered for.  Non-UC Hastings students should plan to apply for financial aid through their home law schools at least one month in advance.
