Study Aids


With over 200 titles to chose from, the most common question students ask is which study aid (or supplement) is best for a given subject. While student staff can relate their experiences and professors may recommend titles that they believe are beneficial, the best method to picking a supplement is to take time to look through the available titles. Below is a rough guide to each study aid's unique style.

Black Letter Series®

The Black Letter Outline Series is designed to help you recognize, understand and master the primary principles of law by providing a good understanding of the rule of law first before applying it to complex fact patterns. Use the Black Letter Outline Series both as a study aid when preparing for class, and as a review when preparing for an examination. Each title is written by a recognized national authority.

Casenotes Legal Briefs®

Keyed to specific casebooks, these "canned briefs" supplement casebook reading by delivering just the pertinent information of selected cases. Students often find these helpful in spotlighting a case's key elements. Updates to editions are obtained by mailing in a publisher-provided form. This tends to be a quick process.

Concise Hornbook Series

This has been developed specifically for law students while maintaining the high academic standards expected of West. The newly redesigned series features concise analyses of fundamental areas of the law by prominent legal scholars. Each text focuses on the core principles and concepts fundamental to understanding the subject matter. Emanuel®

The Emanuel® series is one of the oldest and most popular of the review series, containing consice summaries of black letter law that put complex legal concepts into plain language.

Finals Law School Exam Series®

A newer series designed as a pre-exam study aid containing integrated sections consisting of a substantive outline, objective law school style exam questions, essay exam questions, and fully detailed explanatory answers.



Friedman's Practice Series®

This series is keyed to exam preparation with real law school essay exams, model answers, multiple choice questions and academic analysis. Free digital versions of the books are available to purchasers of the series.



Gilbert®

The oldest law outlines; these are ideal outlines for typical courses with correlation to various standard casebooks.



Glannon Guide Series®

This new series is designed to prepare users for exams by presenting explanatory text and multiple choice questions to review course content and help users analyze exam questions.

High Court Case Summaries®

The best-written case briefs available, High Court Case Summaries clearly and concisely present the facts, issue, decision and rational for each case. An entertaining visual representation of the facts help you remember what each case is about. Perforated pages let you remove individual briefs to incorporate into your class notes. High Court Case Summaries are keyed directly to the major casebooks.



Hornbooks®

With their textbook approach to specific topics, these are popular with lawyers dealing with new subject matters.



Law In A Flash®

Fact pattern question and answer flashcards. These can be used to learn rules and to reinforce comprehension. They make great companions for BART rides.



Nolo Press®

Including such titles as "Everybody's Guide to Small Claims Court" and "Music Law," these are self-help oriented publications. We stock nearly 30 titles and can order special requests from the publisher. Though designed for the lay person, are often used by lawyers.



Nutshell®

With dozens of subjects covered, these are small hornbooks that deliver a textbook approach to subjects.



Professor Series®

Solid outlines in hard-to-find subjects such as Bankruptcy, Environmental Law, Estate and Gift Tax, Family Law, International Law and Professional Responsibility. Publications feature essay exams and answers.



Problems and Answers®

This series is supplements casebooks by providing a skeletal, systematized account of the common law in its present form interspersed with problems and answers to test skill in applying rules to factual situations.
