UC Hastings celebrates its rich relationship with the judiciary. Over 300 judges are UC Hastings alumni and our students have served as post graduate law clerks all over the nation and abroad. A significant number of UC Hastings faculty have also served as law clerks, including for the United States Supreme Court. Students interested in applying for judicial clerkships can take advantage of a range of resources including panels, workshops, a faculty clerkship committee and other resources through the Career Office.
UC Hastings encourages students to consider applying for post-graduate judicial clerkships. They are prestigious and invaluable as enhancements to your legal career. They are also enjoyable, rewarding, and lead to lifelong personal and professional connections. There are clerkship opportunities that exist across the country, as well as in the Bay Area. There is absolutely no downside to a post-graduate judicial clerkship.
For more information, students and alumni may contact Fairuz Abdullah, the Associate Director for Public Interest and Judicial Clerkship Programs. Contact the front desk at (415) 565-4619 for an appointment.

OSCAR: Online System for Clerkship Application and Review
Oscar is a centralized resource that federal judges use to receive electronic clerkship applications. A majority of federal judges use OSCAR as the only way to accept your application. Many Judges do not use OSCAR and will only accept paper applications by mail. If a Judge you are interested is not on OSCAR you can assume they are only accepting paper applications. Some Judge use both OSCAR and also accept paper applications.
Important Information for 2L Applicants
“The Administrative Office of the United States Courts has opened OSCAR to “2Ls” effective November 4, 2013, and OSCAR will release their applications when finalized rather than holding them until a specified release date.
As part of de-linking OSCAR from the Hiring Plan, the Administrative Office Director, Judge John D. Bates, sent a communication today to all federal judges informing them that “2Ls” have access to OSCAR and their applications will be available online at the time of submission. The communication encouraged all judges to use OSCAR to accept applications online, post their positions, and maintain a current judge profile that communicates their hiring preferences.” (Oscar Working Group 11/4/13)
