Joseph Cotchett '64

If he hadn’t been a litigator, Joseph Cotchett '64 would have made a terrific politician.

He is an expert user of the conspiratorial wink. He swears judiciously and often, like the Special Forces paratrooper and army colonel he once was. He wears a sports coat instead of a suit during trials to make himself more approachable. In legal circles, he is considered one of the legendary lions of the profession, an aggressive, take-no-prisoners plaintiff’s lawyer who has gone up against such heavy hitters as the FBI, the U.S. Navy, Charles Keating, and late Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis.

So it should come as no great shock that Cotchett is the man to whom the city of San Jose turned to take on another great, blustering American institution: Major League Baseball. In June, Cotchett filed an antitrust lawsuit against MLB on behalf of the city, accusing the league of a “blatant conspiracy” to block San Jose from luring the Oakland Athletics to the South Bay. “It’s a very interesting case, and I’ve had some great cases,” says the 74-year-old. “It’s certainly a case that cries out for some justice.”

Steve McCormick ’76

Steve McCormick ’76 was featured in a Huffington Post Q&A about ideas and trends in the environmental movement. He is the president of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. He previously served as the CEO at The Nature Conservancy.

“Despite all the great conservation work that's been done over the past 50 years, we haven't staunched the rate of loss of biodiversity,” McCormick told Mark Tercek of The Nature Conservancy.

Barbara Rowland ’85

Barbara Rowland ’85 has joined Post & Schell as a principal in its internal investigations and white-collar defense practice group. She will be based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. Prior to joining Post & Schell, Rowland was vice president, litigation for the nation's largest pharmacy health care provider, a Fortune 20 company. During her tenure, she was responsible for handling high profile government investigations and conducting internal investigations. Her matter responsibilities included federal and state enforcement actions involving Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, DEA regulatory requirements, consumer protection issues, and environmental compliance. Rowland was recognized in August 2013 as Top Litigation Counsel by The First Chair Awards, an annual selection of in-house counsel who have made significant contributions to the legal community.

Framroze Virjee ’85

Framroze Virjee ’85 has been named as the Executive Vice President and General Counsel to the California State University system Board of Trustees. Following a national search Virjee, a partner in Los Angeles-based O'Melveny & Meyers's Labor and Employment practice, was chosen for his vast experience in public education, collective bargaining, Education Code compliance, discrimination and labor litigation.

Eduardo Angeles ‘90

Eduardo Angeles ‘90, a senior assistant city attorney in Los Angeles, was named to the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians by Gov. Jerry Brown. Angeles, 48, has been at the City Attorney’s Office since 2002. Then-City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo brought him to Los Angeles from San Francisco to serve as managing assistant of the Airport Division. He spent 11 years in the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office, rising through the ranks to become head of the Fire Department and Public Protection Team.
