Victories and awards were plentiful over the Veteran’s Day weekend as UC Hastings dominated the Moot Court Competition world.

Thomas Tang Moot Court National Champions Byron Huang (3L) and Joy Siu (2L) barbequed the competition in Kansas City at the NAPABA Convention. As proof that adept legal writing and research is the key to success, Byron & Joy also won the award for Best Brief in the USA!

moot court team2011 Thomas Tang National Champion and 2012-13 Moot Court Board Co-Chair Elaine Kuo shared the secrets of her Moot Court success in guiding Byron and Joy as their alumni coach, and Helen Luu (3L) was an invaluable asset to the team as their student coach.

National Entertainment Law (Pepperdine) Finalist Team Brett Corbett (3L) and Gregory Michael (2L) narrowly missed a complete sweep of all of the awards with their National Team Second Place trophy. They also showed that good writing brings victories by winning the Best Brief Award. Brett was named Best Oral Advocate in the Final Round.

moot court teamBrett and Greg were expertly coached by alumni coach and intellectual property guru Emily Gische and last year’s Pepperdine Best Brief winner and Second Place Team Award winner Michelle LaRocca (3L).

The San Diego National Criminal Procedure Moot Court Competition teams brought home recognition for their oral advocacy. Robert Cashen (3L) was named Second Best Oral Advocate in the tournament and Rachel Lieberstein (2L) was given the Sixth Place Oral Advocate Award.

Rachel and her partner Amy Yellen (2L) advanced to the Octofinal round as did Robert (Bobby) and his partner Brooke McCarthy (3L). Our stellar alumni coaches Agnes Dziadur and Charlie Bisesto, along with student coaches Kaitlin Keohane and Cassie Kerkhoff, provided exceptional training, guidance, perspective, and support to the Criminal Procedure teams this Fall.

Congratulations to the Thomas Tang National Round competitors Vincent Lee (2L) and Nicholas Ma (2L) on their excellency in advocacy and many thanks to their coaches Henry Truong, our 2012-13 Co-Chair, and to Monica Yun (3L) for their devotion and dedication to the Tang team, Tang Competition and to UC Hastings Moot Court.

Thanks to all of our alumni who have come out to judge our teams this semester. With Spring just around the corner, we look forward to having you judge on our campus soon.
