Joan C. Williams

The newest work-life pioneers are men, Joan C. Williams told the New York Times last week.

Josh Levs, a reporter with CNN, filed a charge with the Equal Opportunity Commission, claiming Time Warner, his employer’s parent company, has parental leave policies that discriminate against biological fathers. Biological mothers and adoptive parents get 10 weeks of paid leave. Biological fathers get only two.

“What is happening is the new work-life pioneers are young egalitarian men exactly like this guy,” said Joan C. Williams, founding director of the Center for WorkLife Law. “In many ways, these younger men are acting in ways that mothers have always acted: ‘I have family responsibilities that aren’t going away and either you accommodate them or there is going to be a fight against it.’ In many ways, this is economic contraction fueling gender equality.” Read more here.

Related News: Why do more American workers say they’d prefer a male boss over a female?

“That’s part of a pattern that I call ‘tug of war,’” Williams told Forbes, “when gender bias against women turns into conflict among women.” Men are more likely to wield power than women, and most of us want to work for a boss who has clout. Another issue is that women are under more pressure than men to succeed. Read more here.
