The UC Hastings Black Law Students Association honored Alameda County Superior Court Judge Charles Smiley ’97 and Paul Henderson, Deputy Chief of Staff and Director of Public Safety for the Mayor’s Office in San Francisco, at an event Feb. 13 in the Skyroom.

The men were recognized for their contributions to the legal community.

After 2L Chris Martin sang the Black National Anthem, Smiley was introduced and spoke to a full room of students, alumni and members of the legal community, including Waukeen McCoy ’92 and poet Dr. Jeanne Powell. Smiley spoke about the importance of a diverse legal profession, and urged the students in attendance to persevere, no matter the odds they face in their education and careers.

Henderson was unable to attend the event, held annually to honor African American attorneys during Black History Month. Students were able to mingle and network with alumni and others after Smiley’s address.
